Chiropractor while pregnant?

6/1/2023

Can you go to the chiropractor while pregnant?

One of the most common questions I hear in my practice, especially from new patients, is, "Can I go to the chiropractor while I'm pregnant?" It's a fantastic question, and one I'm always thrilled to answer with an enthusiastic "Yes!" As a chiropractor, I've had the privilege of supporting countless expectant mothers through their pregnancy journeys, and I've seen firsthand the incredible benefits that gentle, specific chiropractic care can offer during this transformative time.

The Demands of Pregnancy on Your Spine and Pelvis

Pregnancy is a truly miraculous process, but it places significant demands on a woman's body. As your baby grows, your center of gravity shifts forward, increasing the curve in your lower back. The hormone relaxin, essential for preparing your pelvis for birth, also loosens ligaments throughout your body, which can lead to instability and discomfort in joints that were once stable.
It's no wonder that many pregnant women experience:
  • Low back pain: Often due to the increased lumbar curve and added weight.
  • Sciatica: Pressure on the sciatic nerve from pelvic misalignment.
  • Pubic Symphysis Dysfunction (PSD): Pain in the front of the pelvis.
  • Neck and upper back tension: Compensating for postural changes.
  • Headaches: Sometimes stemming from neck and upper back issues.
These common discomforts can make daily activities challenging and even disrupt precious sleep.

Why Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy Makes Sense

My goal as your chiropractor during pregnancy is simple: to help your body adapt to these changes with as much ease and comfort as possible. We focus on ensuring your spine and pelvis are optimally aligned, which supports your nervous system – the master control system of your entire body, including your growing baby.
Here’s how we do it safely and effectively:
  1. Gentle, Modified Techniques: Forget any preconceived notions about chiropractic adjustments. For pregnant patients, our techniques are incredibly gentle and specifically modified. We never use aggressive or forceful maneuvers.
  2. Specialized Equipment: We utilize specialized tables with removable abdominal sections or supportive pillows, allowing you to lie comfortably face down, even in your third trimester. Adjustments are also frequently performed while you're on your side or seated.
  3. Focus on Pelvic Balance: A key area of focus is your pelvis. A well-aligned pelvis is crucial not only for your comfort but also for creating optimal space for your baby to move and get into the best possible position for birth. Techniques like the Webster Technique are specifically designed to address sacral and pelvic alignment in pregnant women.
  4. Supporting Your Nervous System: A well-functioning nervous system is vital for a healthy pregnancy. By removing interference (subluxations) in the spine, we help your body's innate healing abilities and communication pathways work at their best.

Beyond Pain Relief: Preparing for Birth

While pain relief is often what brings expectant mothers into my office, the benefits of chiropractic care extend far beyond simply alleviating discomfort. By maintaining proper pelvic alignment and reducing tension, we can help prepare your body for the incredible demands of labor and delivery. Many of my patients report a greater sense of ease and confidence as their due date approaches.

Your Health is Our Priority

As your chiropractor, your health and the health of your baby are my top priorities. I always recommend open communication with your obstetrician or midwife. We work as part of your healthcare team, providing complementary care that supports your overall well-being throughout this special time.
If you're pregnant and experiencing discomfort, or simply want to support your body's amazing journey, I encourage you to explore chiropractic care. It’s a safe, natural, and empowering way to enhance your pregnancy experience.

Most women experience back pain during pregnancy.

Pregnancy and Low Back Pain

Pregnancy and childbirth are one of the most incredible experiences a woman can have in her life. There are a number of dramatic changes going on during the gestational period that can cause physical as well as psychological problems in pregnant women, and the most troublesome out of them is the lower back pain.
Pregnancy and low back pain go hand in hand with most pregnant women due to certain personal, nutritional and environmental factors. According to a recent study, approximately 60-70% of pregnant women experience moderate to severe back pain during pregnancy and the prominent reasons for this include;
Picture
  • -Misalignment of the spine and pelvic bones
  • -Loosening of joints and softening of ligaments
  • -Posture of the mother
  • -Position of the baby
  • -Weight gain
  • -A shift in her center of gravity as her belly and baby continue to grow
  • -Stress and exhaustion
There are multiple invasive as well as non-invasive ways to treat lower back pain; however, most of them have clear side effects or are not as safe and effective as chiropractic care.

Women reduced their back pain in just 4 to 5 days.

Chiropractic is a very effective method for relieving back pain and other associated symptoms during pregnancy. It has long been practiced by midwives and other alternative practitioners for centuries. Looking closer at chiropractic care and its many benefits, it has now been adopted and practiced by professional chiropractors for the past few decades. In one study conducted on chiropractic treatment and pregnancy, it was found that about 93% of the pregnant women experience a dramatic reduction in their lower back pain in just 4 to 5 days of starting chiropractic treatment.
Chiropractors are skilled at treating your lower back pain and other associated symptoms of pregnancy by using the following procedures;
  • Alignment of the bones and joints
  • Massage
  • Specific exercises
By properly aligning the lower back, pelvis, and sacrum, incorporating massage and advising specific exercise, your chiropractor can help you have a healthier, happier pregnancy. You will experience less pain and enjoy many benefits of chiropractic treatment including psychological calmness so you can better focus on the wonder of bringing a new baby into the world.

What is Webster's Technique?

Picture
To create and maintain a perfect environment for the growth and development of the baby, there are many hormonal as well as physical changes going on during pregnancy. The occurrence of changes at a rapid speed causes the lower back and other joints to become misaligned. This misalignment can further lead to increased curvature of the back, protruding abdomen, and postural changes that put pressure on the back and cause pain.
These changes can limit the amount of room for the developing baby, a condition called "intrauterine constraint". It can also restrict the movement of the baby in the mother's womb and can change the optimal delivery position (baby's head should be facing the birth canal for a smooth and quick delivery). This can lead to a prolonged labor and also increases the danger for a cesarean section. By utilizing Webster's Technique, the chiropractor can position the pelvis and sacrum to its optimal position providing balance to the pelvic muscles and ligaments which can reduce torsion to the uterus. Webster's technique allows the baby to have more room in the womb to move into the "head down" position for birth.

A chiropractor aims to align your spine and restore your posture to reduce and prevent lower back pain. Restoration of the optimal posture and alignment of the spine and pelvis improves flexibility, reduces pain and decreases the chances for a prolonged or cesarean delivery. Furthermore, chiropractic care during pregnancy can also help you recover faster after childbirth.

    Benefits of chiropractic treatment

    To help manage back and joint pain, a majority of obstetricians are sending their patients to chiropractors due to its safety and effectiveness for both mother and baby. The benefits of chiropractic care include;
    • It is a safe, drug-free and non-invasive method of the lower back and joint pain relief
    • It increases mobility and provides better flexibility
    • It helps reduce morning sickness and nausea
    • It improves sleep and reduces anxiety
    • It reducing length and eases labor pain and can prevent cesarean delivery in some cases
    • It quickens the post-pregnancy recovery
