What Is Chiropractic?

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine. It operates on the belief that these disorders can affect the nervous system and overall health, and that the body has a natural ability to heal itself.
Key aspects of chiropractic include:
  • Spinal Manipulation (Adjustment): This is the primary treatment method. Chiropractors use their hands or specialized instruments to apply a controlled force to a joint, most commonly in the spine, to improve motion and function.
  • Musculoskeletal Focus: While spinal manipulation is central, chiropractors also treat problems related to other joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments throughout the body (e.g., in the head, jaws, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles).
  • Holistic Approach: Many chiropractors incorporate other therapies and advice, such as:
    • Exercises and stretches
    • Soft tissue therapy (like massage)
    • Heat and ice therapy
    • Nutritional and dietary counseling
    • Lifestyle advice (e.g., posture, stress management)
    • Electrical stimulation
  • Non-Invasive and Drug-Free: Chiropractic generally aims to alleviate symptoms and improve function without the use of surgery or prescription medications.
  • Education and Licensure: To practice in the United States, chiropractors must earn a Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree from an accredited program, pass national board exams, and be licensed by the state. Their education includes studies in basic sciences (like anatomy and physiology) and supervised clinical experience.

Common conditions people seek chiropractic care for include:
  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches (including migraines)
  • Sciatica
  • Joint pain and dysfunction
  • Stiff muscles and muscle aches
  • Injuries from accidents (e.g., whiplash)

Historical Context:

The modern chiropractic profession began in 1895 with Daniel David Palmer, who performed the first chiropractic "adjustment" in Davenport, Iowa. He believed that spinal misalignments (which he called "subluxations") could interfere with the nervous system and lead to health problems. While manual healing methods have existed for centuries, Palmer's work laid the foundation for chiropractic as a distinct healthcare discipline.
It's worth noting that while chiropractic has become more integrated into mainstream healthcare in many places, and research continues to support its efficacy for certain conditions like back pain, some of its foundational ideas (such as the concept of vertebral subluxation as a cause of widespread health issues) have been viewed as pseudoscientific by parts of the medical community. Despite historical controversies, cooperation between chiropractors and conventional medicine is becoming more common, and chiropractic care is often covered by health insurance.

While D.D. Palmer is credited with founding chiropractic, his son, Bartlett Joshua (B.J.) Palmer, is widely known as the "Developer" of chiropractic due to his extensive contributions to the profession. Here are some additional facts about B.J. Palmer:

  • He took over the Palmer School of Chiropractic: B.J. Palmer assumed responsibility for the Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, in 1906 (or 1902, depending on the source). Under his leadership, it became the premier chiropractic college in the world at that time.
  • "The Big Idea": B.J. Palmer is associated with "The Big Idea," a philosophical concept that emphasized the body's innate intelligence and its capacity for self-healing, with the nervous system as its core. He believed that even seemingly minor spinal misalignments (subluxations) could interfere with nerve function and lead to significant health issues. His vision extended beyond just treating symptoms, aiming to restore overall health and well-being.
  • Pioneered Chiropractic Research and Techniques: He was a proponent of extensive research, developing improved methods of spinal adjusting and analysis. He also introduced the use of X-ray techniques in chiropractic, which was a significant advancement for the profession.
  • Broadcasting Pioneer: B.J. Palmer was a broadcasting pioneer. In 1922, he purchased a local radio station, WOC (which he famously associated with "Wonders Of Chiropractic" or "World Of Chiropractic"), and later WHO in Des Moines. These stations were used to market chiropractic and broadcast a variety of content, and he even gave Ronald Reagan his first broadcasting job at WOC-AM.
  • Prolific Writer and Speaker: B.J. Palmer was a dynamic speaker and prolific author, traveling the world to promote chiropractic. He wrote numerous philosophical and travel works, as well as humorous epigrams about chiropractic and life.
  • Battled for Chiropractic Recognition: He tirelessly fought legal and legislative obstacles to the licensing of chiropractors, playing a crucial role in securing chiropractic's place among the health sciences.
  • Emphasis on Upper Cervical Spine: Over his career, B.J. Palmer became increasingly convinced that the upper cervical (neck) spine was key to health, and he modified the Palmer School of Chiropractic curriculum to reflect these ideas.
  • The Palmer Mansion: The house where B.J. and his wife, Mabel Heath Palmer (also a chiropractor and anatomy instructor), lived in Davenport, Iowa, known as The Palmer Mansion, is owned and run by Palmer College of Chiropractic and houses many souvenirs collected during their world travels.
