Pregnancy and Low Back Pain

7/16/2018

Most women experience back pain during pregnancy.

Pregnancy and childbirth are one of the most incredible experiences a woman can have in her life. There are a number of dramatic changes going on during the gestational period that can cause physical as well as psychological problems in pregnant women, and the most troublesome out of them is the lower back pain.
Pregnancy and low back pain go hand in hand with most pregnant women due to certain personal, nutritional and environmental factors. According to a recent study, approximately 60-70% of pregnant women experience moderate to severe back pain during pregnancy and the prominent reasons for this include;

  • -Misalignment of the spine and pelvic bones
  • -Loosening of joints and softening of ligaments
  • -Posture of the mother
  • -Position of the baby
  • -Weight gain
  • -A shift in her center of gravity as her belly and baby continue to grow
  • -Stress and exhaustion
There are multiple invasive as well as non-invasive ways to treat lower back pain; however, most of them have clear side effects or are not as safe and effective as chiropractic care.

Women reduced their back pain in just 4 to 5 days.

Chiropractic is a very effective method for relieving back pain and other associated symptoms during pregnancy. It has long been practiced by midwives and other alternative practitioners for centuries. Looking closer at chiropractic care and its many benefits, it has now been adopted and practiced by professional chiropractors for the past few decades. In one study conducted on chiropractic treatment and pregnancy, it was found that about 93% of the pregnant women experience a dramatic reduction in their lower back pain in just 4 to 5 days of starting chiropractic treatment.
Chiropractors are skilled at treating your lower back pain and other associated symptoms of pregnancy by using the following procedures;
  • Alignment of the bones and joints
  • Massage
  • Specific exercises
By properly aligning the lower back, pelvis, and sacrum, incorporating massage and advising specific exercise, your chiropractor can help you have a healthier, happier pregnancy. You will experience less pain and enjoy many benefits of chiropractic treatment including psychological calmness so you can better focus on the wonder of bringing a new baby into the world.

What is Webster's Technique?

Picture
To create and maintain a perfect environment for the growth and development of the baby, there are many hormonal as well as physical changes going on during pregnancy. The occurrence of changes at a rapid speed causes the lower back and other joints to become misaligned. This misalignment can further lead to increased curvature of the back, protruding abdomen, and postural changes that put pressure on the back and cause pain.
These changes can limit the amount of room for the developing baby, a condition called "intrauterine constraint". It can also restrict the movement of the baby in the mother's womb and can change the optimal delivery position (baby's head should be facing the birth canal for a smooth and quick delivery). This can lead to a prolonged labor and also increases the danger for a cesarean section. By utilizing Webster's Technique, the chiropractor can position the pelvis and sacrum to its optimal position providing balance to the pelvic muscles and ligaments which can reduce torsion to the uterus. Webster's technique allows the baby to have more room in the womb to move into the "head down" position for birth.

A chiropractor aims to align your spine and restore your posture to reduce and prevent lower back pain. Restoration of the optimal posture and alignment of the spine and pelvis improves flexibility, reduces pain and decreases the chances for a prolonged or cesarean delivery. Furthermore, chiropractic care during pregnancy can also help you recover faster after childbirth.
